Did you know that river lampreys often face man-made barriers on their journey to spawning grounds? Carnikava has been renowned for its lamprey fishing traditions for centuries, but their future depends on whether river lampreys can reach suitable spawning habitats and naturally replenish their populations.
That's why the LIFE RiverFlow team will also be part of the Carnikava Lamprey Festival. Join us to discover the fascinating life cycle of the river lamprey and learn how each of us can help protect this unique part of Latvia's natural and cultural heritage.
At the Carnikava Local History Centre, you will have the opportunity to meet experts from LIFE RiverFlow and the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR". At the RiverFlow stand, you can learn how fish passes, dam removal and other river restoration measures help river lampreys reach their spawning grounds, and test your skills in the interactive game "Help the River Lamprey Reach Its Spawning Grounds”. Meanwhile, BIOR researchers will present the latest findings on river lamprey research in Latvia, invite you to step into the shoes of a lamprey scientist, and give you the chance to observe live river lampreys up close in an aquarium.
Come and discover how science is helping conserve river lampreys in our rivers, so they remain an integral part of Latvia's nature, traditions and gastronomy for generations to come.
